Mughals were indeed great lovers of art and architecture. This fact can be well proved by the numerous majestic buildings and monuments that were constructed by them during their rule. Their culture was heavily dictated by the Persian mores. They also loved gardens too a great extent. Humayun's tomb is one such example of their artistry. The mausoleum is a great piece of architecture and in many ways it is the predecessor of the Taj Mahal.

History
Humayun's TombHumayun was the son of the Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty. After Babur's death, Humayun established his capital in Delhi but couldn't maintain it and got defeated by the Persian king, Sher Shah Suri. As a result he was forced to spend his life in exile in the court of the Persian ruler of Iran. Soon after the death of the Afghan king, he got a chance to return to Delhi. But he couldn't really enjoy the fresh air of Delhi for long and died of falling in 1556.

In the Making of Humayun's Tomb
The tomb of Humayun was built in 1562 by the orders of Hamida Banu Begum, the widow of Humayun. Mirak Miyaz Ghiyaz is said to be the chief architect for this tomb. It took eight years in its completion. It had a Char Bagh Garden style, the first of its kind in the region.

Structure
The Humayun's Tomb is set in the sprawling square garden. It is built of red sandstone. It is ornamented with white and black marble. The garden is surrounded from the three sides by a high wall. The fourth side is however bounded by the bank of river Yamuna. The garden is divided into four parts by two bisecting water channels with paved walkways. The top of the central dome of the tomb is about 140 feet from the ground. This massive structure is an eye candy for most of the tourists, who never miss having a glimpse at Humayun's tomb when in Delhi. The tomb is a perfect blend of the Persian and Hindu architecture. The imperial beauty of the tomb is really mesmerizing and stupendous.

Humayun was temporarily buried in his favourite library when he met his last.

Feather to the cap
Humayun's Tomb is one of the most spectacular tombs of the Mughal period. In 1993 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the first garden tomb of the Mughals. It was the forerunner of the incomparable Taj Mahal.
