Kolkata is the culturally rich capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located on the eastern banks of river Hooghly and was established in the year 1686. Kolkata has remained the centre of education, literature, science and politics since time unknown. The city played a pivotal role in the freedom struggle of India. Many considers, Kolkata to be the cultural capital of India. Till 17th century, Kolkata was only a village but with the passing time. The city has become one of the major metropolitans along with Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

Birla PlanetariumAs far as main attractions of Kolkata are concerned, they are in plenty here. The place offers all the delights of a fun-filled holiday to the tourists coming here. Some of the noteworthy attractions in Kolkata are:

Fort William - Fort William is one of the prime attractions in Kolkata. Situated on the banks of the river Hooghly, Fort William has got its name from King William III of England. It was constructed in the year 1696. It was the place where Black Hole Tragedy took place, which ultimately led to the battle of Plassey.

Victoria Memorial - Victoria Memorial in Kolkata is a wonderful museum, established in the year 1921. The museum houses photographs and effigies of the prominent personalities who contributed in making India, incredible. It is one of the finest art museums of Kolkata, spread in 64 acres of land.

Eden Gardens - Eden Gardens is basically a cricket stadium where Indian Cricket team has played several innings and have made innumerable records. It is the oldest cricket playground in the country. The stadium boasts of a large accommodation.

Birla Planetarium - This is one of the largest museums in Asia. It was built in 1962 and the credit for its construction goes to Birla Education Trust. It provides useful piece of information about our solar system, galaxies, life span of stars, space, planets and other heavenly bodies in the most interactive manner via audio video aids. Usually the lectures are given in English, Hindi, and Bengali and occasionally in Oriya, Tamil & Gujarati.

Howrah Bridge - The Howrah Bridge is located over the river Hooghly. It connects the city of Howrah to Kolkata. It is said to be the busiest bridge of the world. It was set up in 1784 and is also famous as " Rabindra Setu". The bridge is an important landmark for the city of Kolkata.

Marble Palace - Marble Palace in Kolkata is an exquisite art gallery, putting on display the marvelous objects of art, sculptures, pictures & Oil Paintings.
Howrah Bridge
Nicco Park - Nicco Park is an amazing amusement park of India. One can indulge in umpteen joy rides and other entertainment activities in the park. The cave ride here is very exciting and thrilling. The park is fondly called as Jheel Meel and is spread over an area of about 40 acres. It is one of the biggest amusement parks in the country and was opened in the year 1991.

Shaheed Minar, National Library and Writer's Building are some of the added attractions of the city of Kolkata.
